At its heart, LSP rests on the idea that people think and chat best by building hands-on models, hashing out ideas together, and chewing over real-world stand-ins for their thoughts2. This article digs into why LSP’s social constructivist roots matter big-time for team learning, and how playful bits aren’t just nice workshop perks – they’re key for safe trial-and-error, mental
safety, and genuine teamwork.

Social Constructivism, the core of LEGO SERIOUS PLAY (LSP), posits that knowledge is constructed through social interactions rather than in isolation. This learning process emerges from dialogue, shared interpretations, and negotiated meanings within a group context. LSP embodies these principles by transforming abstract concepts into concrete models, allowing participants to engage actively with ideas. This hands-on approach, inspired by Seymour Papert’s constructionism, helps make complex ideas tangible and accessible. LSP also facilitates knowledge creation and positions facilitators as catalysts for discovery rather than content experts. This role shift encourages participants to uncover insights collaboratively. The method ensures equal participation, allowing inputs from all organizational levels and promoting a democratic learning environment. By co-creating shared models, teams negotiate and align their understanding of reality, fostering a comprehensive and collective knowledge base. This approach encourages a richer dialogue, reduces defensiveness, and makes participants co-authors of their learning journey, reflecting the constructivist view that truth is co-constructed.
